Top 5: Movies for Halloween

Back in 2020, I wrote a blog post about 31 movies to watch in October, this time I thought I’d narrow it down to my top 5 favourites for Halloween specifically. I’ve actually done a few October/Halloween movie lists posts over the years of having this blog (since I love watching movies during the 'ber' months) but I'd never done a Top 5 style and since I'm enjoying my Top 5's again, I thought I'd so a little post on movie favourites for Halloween.

1. Hocus Pocus (1993)

“Three witches resurrect after 300 years to exact revenge and begin a reign of terror after Max, a young boy who moves to Salem with his family, lights the cursed Candle of Black Flame.”

A Halloween classic in my eyes. I watch this every single year at this time of year and it never gets old. There’s something so comforting about this movie from the storyline to the setting and characters, I just love it and will always recommend it. I really do feel like we lack in comforting Halloween movies but this is definitely one of those. It's been a tradition to watch this throughout the whole of October and on pumpkin carving nights with my brother - something we still do to this day! So I'm looking forward to continuing that tradition this year.

2. Casper (1995)

“Paranormal expert Dr James Harvey has been hired to exorcise the ghosts from her mansion. The situation changes when Harvey's daughter befriends Casper, a friendly ghost.”

This is another of my all time favourites to watch at Halloween. It’s another comfort movie because the set design and storyline are so perfect for this time of year. It used to come on a lot on channel 6 when I was younger at this time of year and I remember being so excited to have my own copy of the DVD so that I could watch it whenever the mood struck me instead of having to hope and wait for it to come on the telly. Now of course it's on streaming services so again is available to watch whenever😄 There's something so nostalgic about this movie and it definitely puts me in the Halloweeny mood.

3. The Haunted Mansion (2003)

“Jim and Sara get a call from Edward Gracey who wants to sell his mansion. However, they discover that the property is haunted. Overtime, Jim realises the importance of his family as they escape.”

This is a movie I’ve only in more recent years started to really appreciate. I feel it’s an underrated classic for this time of year and I never hear too many people bringing it up. It’s perfect for Halloween as it's got the whole haunted house aspect plus Eddie Murphy's in it as well so it's also full of plenty of humour. I also really loved the haunted mansion ride at Disneyland Paris when I went last October so that’s just an added bonus to my enjoyment of the movie itself.

4. Hubie Halloween (2020)

“It's October 31st in Salem, Massachusetts, and a town's eccentric, devoted community volunteer and the good-natured object of his fellow citizens' derision and meanest pranks, finds himself in the midst of a real investigation, for a real murderer.”

This is such a cheesy movie but I really enjoy it. It’s the closest thing, to me, in years to an old classic feeling Halloween movie - like the others on this list. Plus I’m an Adam Sandler fan so any movie he’s in I’ll give a go (even if they’re maybe, objectively, not always the best most epic of movies😄). There’s such a cosy, Halloweeny feel to this movie that I really enjoy too.

5. The Addams Family & Addams Family Values (1991 & 1993)

I’ve put both of these together because I feel like you can’t have one and not the other on the list! Plus the Addams Family movies are such classics for Halloween. The number of people I’ve seen dress up as members of that family over the years at Halloween really just proves to me that these movies are a classic for this time of year! You could have a proper Addams Family themed movie night where you dress up as one of the family, make themed snacks and watch the movies back-to-back! Any excuse to dress up and have a themed night is a perfect night in my eyes.

What’s your absolute must watch movie for Halloween?

Bye for now, xo
