Top 5: Movie Soundtracks

I’ve been watching a fair amount of movies recently and, if you’ve been reading my blog posts for a while I’m sure you’ll already know, I’m a huge movie and music lover. I feel that music used within movies adds so much to the overall telling of the stories within. It can set the mood and add a whole other dimension to the overall cinematic experience.

Since I love talking about movies and music, I decided to create this post on my top 5 favourite movie soundtracks. (Excluding soundtracks from musicals because then this would be much more difficult than it already is to pick 5, but maybe that could be an idea for another blog post...)

So, in no particular order, here are my top 5 picks:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol.1&2
I feel that both of the soundtracks for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies deserve to be on this list together. Both of the Guardian’s movies have such great music - there's a reason why they've got "awesome" in the title. There's just so many hit songs - “Hooked on a Feeling”, “o-o-h Child”, “Mr. Blue Sky”, “The Chain” - only a handful of the iconic songs by iconic artists within these movies! Also, who doesn’t enjoy a good dance distraction from Mr. Chris Pratt - his dance moves = unparalleled. I believe I have developed my dancing style/stolen moves from him in these movies.

2. A Cinderella Story (Original Soundtrack)
Not only is “A Cinderella Story” one of my favourite movies of all time, but the soundtrack for the movie is also one of my favourites. As well as playing the lead in this movie, many of the songs on the movie's soundtrack are sung by Hilary Duff herself. Hilary Duff’s voice instantly brings back 2000s nostalgia which is why I think it was a perfect choice to have her sing some of the music for this 2004 film. Other artists include the likes of The Goo Goo Dolls, Edwin McCain and Jesse McCartney (another well-known voice of the early 2000s). My only slight “issue”, if you like, with this album is that it doesn’t have the song “Hear You Me” by Jimmy Eat World (you know, THE song of the whole entire movie, the kiss in the rain! If you’ve seen the movie you’ll know exactly what song I’m talking about). Despite this fact however, this album still remains on this list.

3. Bandslam (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
I feel that Bandslam, as a movie, is so underrated even though one of the main events of the movie of that it is centred around someone who is a massive David Bowie fan (David Bowie himself even made a cameo in the movie!) and yet this movie still never received the credit it deserved. Anyway, the soundtrack to this movie, in my opinion, is great. It has a whole variety of songs (including “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie) as well as songs covered by the fictitious band ‘I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On’ from the movie. Every time I watch Bandslam, it always makes me wish I had joined a cool band - but at least I can live my dreams vicariously through listening to the soundtrack.

4. School of Rock (Music From and Inspired By The Motion Picture)
“I pledge allegiance to the band of Mr Shcneebly”
‘School of Rock’ was one of my favourite movies when I was younger. Everything from the cast to the music is just perfect in my opinion. Jack Black is hilarious as well as a very talented musician. The soundtrack features the songs that are performed within the movie by the school band as well as other songs which play within the movie - including songs from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Led Zeppelin and The Who (amongst others). I grew up with a fair amount of Rock music - thank you dad - which is may be another reason as to why I love this movie and soundtrack.

5. Top Gun (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
‘Top Gun’ is an iconic 80s movie and so it only makes sense that it would also have an iconic soundtrack. The music which plays within and throughout the film really fits into the narrative of what is going on in the movie at particular points - each song perfectly captures the mood of what is happening in each scene. Kenny Loggins has brilliant songs within the movie - “Danger Zone” is such a perfect song for the whole tone of the movie and the timing of “Playing With The Boys” was brilliant for the scene it was played in. Overall, I just feel that it was a perfect soundtrack for the movie as a whole.

There are many other amazing movie soundtracks out there, what are your favourites?

Bye for now, xo
